## GENERAL FAQs

__Q. What is RISING?__   
A. RISING is Victoria's flagship festival of new art, music, performance held in June each year in the heart of Naarm/Melbourne.   

__Q. How is the festival funded?__   
A. RISING is funded by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria and Visit Victoria. We also receive support through City of Melbourne, as well as a range of sponsors and donors.   

__Q.  Which philanthropic foundations are supporting RISING?__   
A. For 2024, RISING is in receipt of support from five philanthropic foundations. These are Bowness Family Foundation, Playking Foundation, Robert Salzer Foundation, Canny Quine Foundation and John Truscott Foundation. __Q. Who are RISING’s media partners?__

A. RISING returns on the first day of winter—01 — 16 June 2024.  

__Q. I’m not sure if RISING is for me. What kind of events will be in the program?__   
A. RISING is for everyone. From visual art, performance and public art installations to live music and parties, we have all kinds of experiences for you to enjoy whatever you’re into.  

__Q. Who is curating the festival?__   
A. Hannah Fox and Gideon Obarzanek are RISING’s co-Artistic Directors and Chief Executives. They lead a diverse team of national and international arts professionals in programming the festival including Senior Curators Kimberley Moulton and Grace Herbert, Head of Music Hayley Percy and Melbourne Art Trams Curator Jarra Karalinar Steel.

Climate change is real. We acknowledge that traditional festival activities have been, by design, unsustainable, and that we can do better.  

RISING strives to deliver events with an enduring and balanced approach to environmental responsibility, social progress, cultural consciousness and economic activity. We make decisions as an organisation, balancing the needs of people, planet and profit. We value community, diversity, inclusion, accessibility and sustainability. 

RISING is minimising our impact on the environment. We aspire to produce zero waste and are working towards this goal by consuming fewer resources and designing out waste in the first place. With this lens we’re choosing products and services that can contribute to positive social, cultural and economic development. 

Even if it’s a bit inconvenient, even if it’s hard, even if we fail, we want to take the lead and engage our event community in the conversation. And each year, we want to continually question the way we do things as we learn and grow.

- We’re learning from experts, doing our research and upskilling our team to make sustainable choices across all departments
- We’re aligning our climate-responsible event strategy with science-based targets and globally agreed ambitions
- We’re scrutinising our supply chains and considering the full impacts of the materials and products we use, as we work towards a more circular economy rather than a linear one
- We’re developing a Sustainability Action Plan and embedding sustainable considerations into our official project processes
- We’re leaning into digital preferences over printing, in house, in marketing and with our cashless and ticketing systems
- We’re approaching our food and beverage offerings as an opportunity to showcase sustainable practice–sustainable farming, fresh, fair and seasonal paddock-to-plate menus, ethically-sourced ingredients always, and minimising single-use plastic in service
- We’re getting wise with merchandise and uniforms, selling useful, reusable, items and thinking circularity when it comes to festival attire. We’re seeking ethically sourced and manufactured products made from durable and sustainable materials
- We’re measuring our carbon footprint to analyse our impact, create a baseline of Greenhouse Gas emission boundaries and set goals for reductions and improvements
- We’re looking into carbon balancing projects to give back to our planet; to restore and regenerate as we rise

The museum is located in Fed Square, which is opposite Flinders Street train station, and sits within Melbourne’s Free Tram Zone.

If your journey starts or finishes outside the boundaries of the Free Tram Zone, you must touch on your myki at the reader to make sure you have a valid ticket.

BICYCLES

If you plan to cycle to ACMI, you can lock your bike to purpose-built bicycle racks installed around the perimeter of Fed Square, but you’ll need to bring your own lock. You can’t bring your bike into ACMI itself.

Wilson Parking is available Flinders Gate Car Park, 172-192 Flinders Street (20m from venue) or at Fed Square Rooftop, Russell Street (240m from venue). ACCESSIBLE ENTRY

ACMI has two entrances: one on Flinders Street, and the other in Fed Square.

The Flinders Street entrance is easily accessible via a wheelchair ramp. This entrance is closed outside museum opening times. To access ACMI outside these hours, enter via the Fed Square Entrance.

The Fed Square entrance is located in the heart of Fed Square plaza, between Chocolate Buddha and Beer Deluxe. Please be aware that the Fed Square plaza is cobblestoned and may be difficult to navigate for visitors using mobility aids.

To get to the Fed Square entrance from the Flinders Street entrance, you can use the lifts near the end of The Atrium – to the left of Beer Deluxe – to get to the Fed Square plaza level.

LIFTS

A series of lifts (or elevators) offer access to all levels of ACMI.

- __Ground floor – Level 1 access only.__ The Ground floor lift is located between Tickets & Information desk and the entrance to The Story of the Moving Image exhibition.
- __Ground – Level 1 & 2 access.__ This Ground Floor lift is located behind the stairs opposite the bathrooms. You can access it by continuing down the corridor between Tickets & Information desk and the entrance to The Story of the Moving Image exhibition. This lift grants you access to levels 1 and 2.
- __Ground floor – Basement Gallery 4 access.__ A goods lift that allows access to the Underground Gallery 4 is located behind Gallery 2 and 4, via a corridor. Only in use when an exhibition is on view in Gallery 4.
- __Level 1 – Cinemas access.__ here are two lifts located on Level 1. As you enter from Fed Square, one is around the corner on your right, as you pass the Tickets & Information desk and approach the stairs. If you make a hard right towards Hero at ACMI and the Level 1 toilets, you will see the lift. This is the best lift option to reach the Cinemas level (Level 2).
- __Level 1 – Galleries access.__ As you enter from Fed Square, walk past the wall of screens and seating area in front of the wall of cabinets on your left, the lift is located opposite the seating area. This lift provides access to Ground floor, the Galleries level. 
- __Level 2 – Level 1 access.__ The Level 2 Lift services the cinemas. It goes down to Level 1, where you will find the restaurant and bar, Hero at ACMI; and the Labs Level. This lift also provides access to Ground floor, the Galleries level.

ACCESSIBLE BATHROOMS

Toilets are located on Ground floor and Level 1. ACMI has wheelchair accessible toilets on both floors.

Baby change facilities are available near the toilets at the Flinders St (Ground floor) and Fed Square (Level 1) entrances.

COMPANION CARDS

Companion Cards, registered in Victoria and interstate, provide the carers accompanying card holders with free access to ACMI programs.

WHEELCHAIRS

If you use a wheelchair you can access all of their spaces.

If you need to borrow a wheelchair for use inside the Museum, present your ID at the Tickets & Information Desk (located at Ground floor and Level 1 respectively) and we’ll organise one for you free of charge.

GUIDE DOGS

Guide Dogs and registered assistance animals are welcome throughout ACMI. But only registered animals. No pets, please!

HEARING LOOPS

Free hearing devices are available for use in the ACMI Cinemas and Studios and can be borrowed on presentation of ID. Visit the Tickets & Information desks on Level 1 or Ground Floor to arrange. 

The devices come with headphones or connect with hearing aids via a neck loop. You can choose what you prefer.

MOBILITY EQUIPMENT HIRE

Travellers Aid, based at Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations, provides mobility equipment hire, including manual wheelchairs and motorised scooters.

To hire equipment, visit the Travellers Aid website or call 03 9068 8187.

Pre-booked equipment can be collected at Flinders Street station (across the road from Fed Square) or Southern Cross station.

Guide Dogs and registered assistance animals are welcome throughout ACMI. But only registered animals. No pets, please!

HEARING LOOPS

Free hearing devices are available for use in the ACMI Cinemas and Studios and can be borrowed on presentation of ID. Visit the Tickets & Information desks on Level 1 or Ground Floor to arrange. 

The devices come with headphones or connect with hearing aids via a neck loop. You can choose what you prefer.

MOBILITY EQUIPMENT HIRE

Travellers Aid, based at Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations, provides mobility equipment hire, including manual wheelchairs and motorised scooters.

ALPHA60 Chapter House

Located on the northern bank of the Yarra River between Federation Square and Melbourne Park, Birrarung Marr features a range of native flora and sculpted terraces. It is also the location for the children's arts centre, ArtPlay, and provides space for many events held throughout the year.
In Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung culture, 'Birrarung' is the traditional name of the Yarra River; and 'marr' refers to the mist that sometimes settles over the Birrarung. The park name reflects the ‘river of mists'.

This area was historically used for railway lines and yards from 1856. In 1992, the Victorian Government undertook a process of reorganisation of land uses around the then proposed Federation Square. This led to the reclamation of the former railyard to allow access to the river and land for public open space purposes. 

Construction of the park began in 2000 and was a joint venture between the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government. Birrarung Marr was opened in 2002. 

The park hosts a variety of native flora, sculpted terraces, pedestrian and bicycle paths and is used for numerous festivals and events throughout the year. 

The former rail use continues to be represented by the adaptation of the former Princes Bridge Lecture Room (a purpose-built railway training building constructed in 1916-17) into ArtPlay, a children’s art centre and gallery. 

At the east end of the park, the William Barak pedestrian bridge leads directly to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and the Tanderrum Bridge leads directly to the Melbourne Park tennis centre.

WALKING

Birrarung Marr is an approximately 7 minute walk (600m) from Flinders Street Station, via Princes Walk and Flinder Walk, and a 10 minute walk (850m) from the MCG. THE MAIN SQUARE  

The undulating surface of the Main Square is made up of sandstone cobblestones, with a marked access path. Swanston Street offers the best access to the Main Square, and lift access is available to and from The Atrium. The Big Screen is equipped with a hearing loop and there are accessible toilets located next to Time Out Café. The Main Stage has lift access for performers, and St Paul’s Court, Swanston Street Forecourt and The Amphitheatre also have wheelchair access.

There are accessible public toilets and baby-change facilities located in the Main Square, next to Time Out Cafe and in The Atrium, next to IceBar.  

ACCESSIBLE PARKING

SEATING OPTIONS  

If you have trouble standing and require a seat for a standing show, The Forum can arrange this for you. They have a few different seating options suitable for different mobility levels and it’s always recommended that you confirm your needs with the box office prior to show day. WHEELCHAIR VIEWING FORUM MAIN ROOM  

Depending on the show The Forum has multiple viewing areas available for wheelchair users in the main room. Access to both areas is via a ramp from the foyer.  

These areas are:

- Near the main bar  

To book a wheelchair viewing spot [please call or email the Box Office](https://forummelbourne.com.au/accessibility). If you’ve been to a show with us before and have a preferred area, please let us know when booking. These areas have a limited capacity so it’s best to get in contact as early as possible.  

Wheelchair seats for seated shows are located at the back right of the dance floor, please contact The Forum box office to book a wheelchair seat.  

Please see the security or The Forum box office staff when you arrive and they will be able to show you to your space.  

WHEELCHAIR VIEWING FORUM UPSTAIRS  

Forum II has a number of wheelchair spaces available at the front of the room. If you would like to reserve a wheelchair space, please contact the Box Office before purchasing tickets.

ACCESSIBLE PARKING

Parking is available in the Arts Centre Melbourne/NGV car park or at the Australian Ballet Centre car park, both accessible from Kavanagh St, Southbank. Accessible toilets are available on all levels of the hall.

PHYSICAL ACCESS 

All levels of Hamer Hall are accessible via lifts and escalators.

Removable seats/spaces for wheelchair or scooter users are available on all levels of Hamer Hall, along with companion seating. To book, call the MSO Box Office on (03) 9929 9600. Other accessible seating options are also available, including seats situated on aisles, without stairs, close to entry points, or with moveable arm rests.

Walkers are not permitted to stay in the hall during performances, but can be used to access seats and then removed and minded by venue staff for the duration of the concert. Walkers can then be retrieved by staff upon request at interval and at the conclusion of the concert.

Complimentary loan wheelchairs can also be booked to assist with travel throughout the building, including to and from the Arts Centre Melbourne/NGV car park. Please call the Arts Centre Melbourne Contact Centre on 1300 182 183 for assistance with loaning a wheelchair.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Flinders Street Station is located 250 metres from Hamer Hall. Exit the station toward St Kilda Rd, turn right and head south. Once across the Yarra River, Hamer Hall will be on your right. For timetable information and trip planning [visit PTV](https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/).

The Arts Precinct tram stop (Stop #14) is 210 metres from Hamer Hall. It is located outside the National Gallery of Victoria and is serviced by tram routes 1, 3/3a, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72. The safest place to pick up and drop off passengers is the Sturt Street entrance of the Centre, away from the busy intersection.

Nearest accessible train station: The nearest station is Flinders Street, located approximately 10 minutes walk from the Centre. 

Nearest accessible tram stop: The nearest tram stop is Stop 17 (Route 1), located directly outside the Centre on Sturt St. This is a platform tram stop providing level access to low floor trams, passenger shelter and protection from traffic. Melbourne Recital Centre is a short walk down Southbank Boulevard (approximately 200 metres). 

You can also take routes 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 16, 64, 67 or 72 and alight at Stop 16, outside the National Gallery of Victoria and walk to the Centre via Southbank Boulevard.

ACCESSIBLE ENTRANCE

The Comedy Theatre can provide a ramp into one of the front doors on Exhibition Street. A member of our security or front of house staff will be able to assist you on arrival at the theatre. At the doors facing on to Exhibition Street there is a small step, which as you move away from Lonsdale Street is reduced to a small lip. Doors are usually propped open during performances. The entrance opens directly into the foyer, which is small and can become quite congested.

ACCESSIBLE BATHROOMS

There are accessible toilets located on all foyer levels and backstage areas of the Centre. Please ask our venue staff for assistance in locating the one nearest to your seating or working location. 

EASY ACCESS SEATING AND WHEELCHAIR ACCESS

For the convenience of patrons who have restricted mobility but do not require the use of a wheelchair, Melbourne Recital Centre has identified locations within the auditorium where patrons do not need to use stairs to reach their seats. These seats are located in row U of the Stalls, row A of the Circle, and seats 11-15 of both upper wings. Accessible seating in the wings are also wider and have articulated, raising arm-rests.

Wheelchair accessible spaces are located in Stalls Row U and the Upper East Wing, all with Companion seating available. All seating and wheelchair spaces can be booked through all MRC sales channels, including through the MRC website.

LIFTS AND ESCALATORS 

Lift access is available to all foyer levels of the building and all backstage areas (except the Orchestra Pit). Escalator access is also available between Ground Level and foyer Level 1.

ASSISTANCE ANIMALS

Melbourne Recital Centre welcomes all visitors with assistance animals (such as guide dogs) certified by a registered authority. Please inform THE Ticketing Services team, when making your booking over the phone or in person or email boxoffice@melbournerecital.com.au in advance of your visit the Centre.

HEARING LOOP

Patrons who are deaf or hard of hearing may access our hearing loops in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall and Primrose Potter Salon. Please switch your hearing aid to the ‘T’ position to access this service, or request a receiver and headphones from the Front of House team. For advice about using your hearing aid at the Centre, please speak with venue staff for assistance. In Elisabeth Murdoch Hall the hearing loop is available in stalls only. The hearing loop is available throughout the Primrose Potter Salon.

The best spot for drop off and pick-up is on Flinders Street out the front of the venue, or if there is no available. spaces, across the road out the front of the Atrium at Federation Square.

The main entrance (which is also accessible) is on Flinders Street.

If entering from the main entrance, continue walking down the Chapter House Lane pathway, and turn left just before the Cathedral wall. 

SEATING  

Due to the environment of this event, there is scattered seating throughout the site, although seating cannot be reserved, if you need assistance please let staff know.

Please be aware that Night Trade is a high sensory environment involving sound and roving performances.

LIGHTING  

There is low lighting on the site as needed for artwork and performances. However if you have low vision and need assistance, please let staff know.

Enter The Capitol Arcade from Swanston Street or Howie Place. Halfway through the arcade there’s a lift (between the jeweller and the dry cleaner). Take the lift up to The Capitol’s Foyer level. From the Foyer, a separate lift provides access to the Theatre, Salon and Lounge levels inside The Capitol.

Wheelchair accessible amenities are located on the Foyer level. Facilities include a baby change area.

ACCESSIBLE SEATING

The Capitol Theatre has eight accessible spaces, accompanied by eight companion seats. Four of these spaces are accessible from the Foyer level. The remaining four spaces are accessible from the Salon level (Level 3) via the lift. There are two main entrance points to the Arts and Cultural Building from Swanston St – either walk down Monash Road (Gate 4) or enter via the Amphitheatre closer to Grattan St (Gate 6).  

The Union Theatre and the Guild Theatre are both on Level 2. The Venue Management and Union House Theatre offices can be found on Level 3. 

PARKING

The closest car park is the Eastern Precinct Car Park at 375 Cardigan Street, Carlton, near the corner of Elgin Street. __Fees:__ On weekdays, $12.50 for 4 hours, $25 for all day and $10 after 5pm, weekends and public holidays.  

__Payment:__ Scan your debit or credit card to enter the carpark. Upon exit, the boom gate will indicate the amount owing and pay with your debit or credit card at the gate. You cannot pay with cash at this location.
