Some top picks for Australia’s major triennial of Asia-Pacific performance
Asia TOPA is back Thursday 20 February—Monday 10 March. For three weeks Asian-Pacific visionaries bring dance, theatre, music visual art from across the region to Melbourne/Naarm. Some RISING alumni are hitting the stage with new work, alongside heaps of exciting First Nations voices and surprises. So we've put together some highlights to help you navigate the program.

Fire Drill Scenario—Geumhyung Jeong
In Oil Pressure Vibrator (RISING, 2023) South Korean artist Geumhyung Jeong drilled into preconceptions about sexuality and technology. Her latest wry, risk-loving performance challenges the safety zones of art and life.

Opera for the Dead (祭歌) —Mindy Meng Wang and Monica Lim
Wander through an immersive music and visual experience. Opera for the Dead (祭歌) harnesses old and new technologies to explore the connection between life and death.

Gapu Ŋupan—RACHAEL WALLIS, BANULA MARIKA AND SUMING RUPI
Created over five years of cross-cultural collaboration, Gapu Ŋupan has been made by Yolŋu, Paiwan and Amis artists from North East Arnhem Land and Taiwan. It's a joyous work that transports you onto Country through song, dance and visuals.

U>N>I>T>E>D—Chunky Move
Chunky Move premiere this new work. Six dancers explore machine mysticism and spirituality in a post-industrial digital age. Set to a soundtrack of gamelan-infused trance and techno.

Pulau (Island)—Melanie Lane
A site-specific response to Yayoi Kusama’s iconic body of work, performed in the NGV’s Great Hall, beneath Kusama’s seminal installation Dots Obsession.

Home Bound—Luke George & Daniel Kok
Over 15 days, a diverse range of craft specialists, community groups, and participants will weave their materials, skills, stories, and histories together in a series of workshops and activities.

Nightlife
Performance art and club culture collide in the Nightlife program, featuring Justin Shoulder, Scott So, and THE B_B which unites performance priestesses Betty Apple and Betty Grumble in a transcendent dance ritual. Plus plenty more.

Tiny, Fluffy, Sweet—Ran Chen
A limited season full of heart, humour and biting cultural insight. For Tiny, Fluffy, Sweet Beijing and Utrecht-based theatre-maker and artist Ran Chen brings her fascination with cute animal videos that was ignited in the pandemic.

Middle of a Moment—Aki Onda
Middle of a Moment celebrates the expansive practice of renowned artist, composer, and curator Aki Onda. Taking in objects, people and places, this collection of intricate sonic works is Onda’s first-ever survey exhibition in Australia.

ANE TA ABIA—AARON CHOULAI, AUSTRALIAN ART ORCHESTRA AND THE TATANA VILLAGE CHOIR
Created by the Australian Art Orchestra’s Artistic Director Aaron Choulai with Papua New Guinea’s Tatana Village choir, this one-off concert and film features the Motuan singing style of Peroveta and the distinct sounds of Australian jazz and composition.

SONIK EKOLOGIES—LIQUID ARCHITECTURE
A free 30-minute listening experience, featuring three newly-commissioned sound works by Markus Rumbino (Papua), Rani Jambak (Sumatra) and Isobel D’Cruz Barnes. Each session opens with ritual of sipping a traditional Javanese Jamu herbal drink.
