Some top picks for Australia’s major triennial of Asia-Pacific performance

Asia TOPA is back Thursday 20 February—Monday 10 March. For three weeks Asian-Pacific visionaries bring dance, theatre, music visual art from across the region to Melbourne/Naarm. Some RISING alumni are hitting the stage with new work, alongside heaps of exciting First Nations voices and surprises. So we've put together some highlights to help you navigate the program.

Gapu Ŋupan—RACHAEL WALLIS, BANULA MARIKA AND SUMING RUPI

Created over five years of cross-cultural collaboration, Gapu Ŋupan has been made by Yolŋu, Paiwan and Amis artists from North East Arnhem Land and Taiwan. It's a joyous work that transports you onto Country through song, dance and visuals.

A limited season full of heart, humour and biting cultural insight. For Tiny, Fluffy, Sweet Beijing and Utrecht-based theatre-maker and artist Ran Chen brings her fascination with cute animal videos that was ignited in the pandemic.

Middle of a Moment—Aki Onda

Middle of a Moment celebrates the expansive practice of renowned artist, composer, and curator Aki Onda. Taking in objects, people and places, this collection of intricate sonic works is Onda’s first-ever survey exhibition in Australia.

ANE TA ABIA—AARON CHOULAI, AUSTRALIAN ART ORCHESTRA AND THE TATANA VILLAGE CHOIR

Created by the Australian Art Orchestra’s Artistic Director Aaron Choulai with Papua New Guinea’s Tatana Village choir, this one-off concert and film features the Motuan singing style of Peroveta and the distinct sounds of Australian jazz and composition.
